Fluoride Poisoning Of America

Adolf Hitler once said: If you tell a lie long enough and loud enough, people will start to will believe it.

I just want to take a minute here to remind all my readers of just how corrupt a government looks when it collectively looks other way and panders to mega corporations like DuPont and Monsanto. When the government of any nation forgets it's people and instead, focuses on defending and promoting the interests of powerful corporations, you no longer have a Democracy. Instead, you have a Plutocracy, where the wealthy elite control the political process and use laws to further enrich themselves at the expense of the public. Keep in mind when some politician says big business needs to be deregulated, just how much neither entity your government or big business cares about your health or the health of this wonderful blue planet we live on. That is a fact, proven by their performance my friends. Their ONLY concern is MONEY and their only argument for deregulation is that it will stimulate this floundering corrupt economy. A direct result of greed not conservation. Even though there is miles of evidence that BPA in plastics and can-goods register receipts is incredibly damaging to living things the FDA pretends like its hands are tied. As I've written in my articles on BPA before, their argument is it's your choice to use those products. Monsanto  genetically modified our grains like corn and soy so they can dump massive quantities of pesticides on them and the crops won't die. Then tell you, you don't have to eat the product, it's your choice. Is it really?- when GMO corn or soy is in just about every packaged food product there is. So today I'm going to educate you on how your being poisoned by your water, food and environment with fluoride, but you say I don't drink tap water. However you take showers, and absorb chemicals through your skin. You drink sodas, beer, juice, and other foods using fluoridated water in their production. You use fluoridated toothpaste with the FDA's blessing. Even though on the box it states if you swallow it, call poison control. So the next time a politician says business needs less regulation, to help this pathetically corrupt economy, reread this blog and remember when it's time to vote, it's your choice.

So what is fluoride? Well, fluoride is any combination of elements containing the fluoride ion. In it's elemental form, fluorine is a pale yellow, highly toxic and corrosive gas. In nature, fluorine is found combined with minerals as fluorides. It's the most chemically active nonmetallic element of any element and also is the most reactive electro-negative ion. Because of this extreme reactivity, fluorine isn't found in nature as an uncombined element. Fluorine is a member of group VIIa of the periodic table. It readily displaces other halogens, such as chlorine, bromine and iodine from their mineral salts. With hydrogen it forms hydrogen fluoride gas which, in a water solution, becomes hydrofluoric acid.

The atomic weapons and fertilizer industry have contributed greatly to the overall levels of toxic fluoride pollution in many communities. First declassified documents appear to show that, fluoride was the key chemical in atomic bomb production, according to government documents. Massive quantities of fluoride, millions of tons, were essential for the manufacture of bomb-grade uranium and plutonium for nuclear weapons throughout the Cold War. One of the most toxic chemicals known, fluoride rapidly emerged as the leading chemical health hazard of the U.S atomic bomb program, both for workers and for nearby communities, the declassified documents reveal. The bomb program's fluoride safety studies were conducted at the University of Rochester, site of one of the most notorious human radiation experiments of the Cold War, in which unsuspecting hospital patients were injected with toxic doses of radioactive plutonium. These unclassified documents say that fluoride studies were conducted with the same ethical mind set, in which "national security" was paramount." Are you still with me, I know this is boring, but scary stuff right. I mean it suggests there was a certain level of conspiracy by the US government and DuPont to bamboozle and "guinea pig"our citizens. But I digress.

Water fluoridation was devised by the very men who sought to gain from it, the kings of the aluminum and fertilizer industries. No legitimate, non-biased tests have ever been performed.  No benefit ever proven. So what is this stuff? Fluoride is an EPA Classified toxic waste product, and we the public, are the toxic waste disposal program. The phosphate industry uses a devise called "wet scrubbers" on their exhaust stacks.  These pollution control devices capture fluoride gases produced in the production of commercial fertilizer. In times before regulation, the factories let these gases escape. Vegetation and crops were destroyed, and cattle were deformed and horribly died. In huge areas surrounding these plants.

However, the impacts of this toxic industry's fluoride emissions are still being felt, more subtly, by millions of people, people who for the most part don't live anywhere near a phosphate plant. That's because, after this toxic waste is captured in the scrubbers, the fluoride acid (hydrofluorosilicic acid), a classified hazardous waste, is barreled up and actually sold, unrefined, to communities across the country. These communities add hydrofluorosilicic acid to their water supplies as the primary fluoride chemical for water fluoridation. So the fluoride added to the water is not naturally occurring fluoride. It's a chemical byproduct, purchased from chemical plants here and from China. It is used in the manufacture of effervescing steel, and the smelting and refining of light metals. It's also used as a wood preservative, an adhesive preservative, an insecticide, a protective coating for metals, a pickle for steels and other metals, a flux for soldering and welding, as well as a flux and pacifier for ceramic, glass and porcelain enamel. Even if you don't live in a community where fluoride is added to water, you'll still be getting a dose of it through cereal, soda, juice, beer and any other processed food and drink manufactured with fluoridated water. It is total fluoride intake from all sources which must be considered for any adverse health effect evaluation, including intake by ingestion, inhalation and absorption through the skin.

Ingesting fluoride is not good for your teeth. It's not truly natural calcium fluoride, but fluosilicic acid toxins being pushed as fluoride. What cities call "fluoride" is actually a toxic cocktail of over 100 deadly industrial chemicals and heavy metals, many of which are purchased in bulk from China, where industrial processing plants are trying to get rid of their excess toxic waste by labeling it "sodium fluoride" and when they get caught they pay an insignificant fine. France, Germany, Belgium, The Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Northern Ireland, Austria, Czech Republic, Australia, Canada do NOT put fluoride in their water supply. If fluoridation is such a boon to mankind, why on earth would so many nations refuse to do it? According to statements from these governments, the main reason is that they consider it,  "unethical medication of persons without their consent". All fluorides used for municipal treatment that are derived from industrial waste, also have arsenic, lead and other highly toxic metals and compounds including radioactive isotopes that are easily brought along with it. Fluorine compounds or fluorides are listed by the US Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) as among the top 20 of 275 substances posing the most significant threat to human health. Fluorides are cumulative toxins. The fact that fluorides accumulate in the body is the reason that U.S. law requires the Surgeon General to set a Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) for fluoride content in public water supplies as determined by the EPA. This requirement is specifically for the purpose of avoiding a condition known as Crippling Skeletal Fluorosis (CSF), a disease that progresses through three stages. The MCL, designed to prevent only the third and crippling stage of this disease, is set at 4ppm or 4mg per liter. It was assumed that people retain half of this amount (2mg), and therefore 4mg per liter is considered safe. However, a daily dose of 2-8 mg is known to cause the third crippling stage of CSF. In 1998 EPA scientists, whose job and legal duty it is to set the Maximum Contaminant Level, declared that this 4ppm level was fraudulently set by outside forces in a decision omitting 90 percent of the data showing the mutagenic properties of fluoride. The Clinical Toxicology of Commercial Products, 5th Edition (1984) gives lead a toxicity rating of 3 to 4 (3 = moderately toxic, 4 = very toxic) and the EPA has set 0.015 ppm as the MCL for lead in drinking water with a goal of 0.0ppm. The toxicity rating for fluoride is 4, yet the MCL for fluoride is currently set at 4.0ppm, over 250 times the permissible level for lead.
According to data from the World Health Organization the European countries that have refused to fluoridate public water have about the same level of tooth decay as the United States. However in the U.S. Fluorosis (over-fluoridation of teeth resulting in white spots later becoming brownish spots and extreme brittleness) is becoming an epidemic problem. Read the back of a fluoridated toothpaste tube if you swallow the minute amount you put on your toothbrush you are supposed to call poison control, not kidding read it.
The July 2000, peer-reviewed cover story of the Journal of the American Dental Association (JADA) clarified for every dentist in America that ingestion of fluoride does not provide any significant reduction in the incidence of tooth decay, and that any beneficial dental effect is as a result of topical application directly to the tooth.
In short, dental cavities are not a result of a lack of fluoride exposure, and more fluoride is not better in the prevention of tooth decay. Also, in a Congressional investigation by the House Committee on Science, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the CDC, National Sanitation Foundation, and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), all replied to inquiries that they have no scientific studies on the actual fluorine-bearing substances used in 90% of the nation's fluoridation programs. The FDA, in a December 2000 communication, stated that "Fluoride, when used for the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease in man or animal is a drug that is subject to Food and Drug Administration regulation." and that "No fluoride substance intended to be ingested for the purpose of reducing tooth decay has ever been approved for safety and effectiveness." Men's Health Magazine identified the following 10 cities for:

Worst Teeth In America:

1. St. Louis - Fluoridated since 1963
2. Philadelphia - Fluoridated since 1954
3. Newark (NJ) - Not fluoridated
4. Baltimore (MD) -Fluoridated
5. New Orleans (LA) - Fluoridated since 1974
6. Jackson, Mississippi - Fluoridated since 1969
7. Jersey City, New Jersey - Not fluoridated
8. Milwaukee (WI) - Fluoridated since 1953
9. Kansas City (MO) - Fluoridated since 1981
10. Dallas (TX) - Fluoridated since 1966

Companies also manufacturer synthetic cryolite, a fluoride-pesticide that's being secretly sprayed on grapes and other crops, adding huge quantities of fluoride to your food. Synthetic cryolite is mainly used as a flux in the aluminum smelting by fused-salt electrolysis. It is also an opalizer in the manufacture of enamel, and an opacifier and auxiliary solvent of glass and enamel.
Many non-organic foods contain extremely high levels of fluoride because of the pesticide chemicals sprayed on them, and in some cases, non-organic produce contains up to 180 times the amount of fluoride found in tap water. Fluoride-based pesticide chemicals such as cryolite (sodium hexafluoroaluminate) are commonly used on non-organic food crops because they are highly effective at both killing pests and protecting crops against pest damage. These same chemicals tend to persist in, and on, the produce that unsuspecting consumers regularly eat as their everyday meals. About one-third of the average person's fluoride exposure comes from non-organic food grown using fluoride chemicals. Citrus fruits, it turns out, are allowed by law to be contaminated with up to 95 parts per million (ppm) of sodium aluminum fluoride, while potatoes are permitted to have up to 22 ppm on the outside skin, and two ppm on the inside flesh. Raisins are allowed to have 55 ppm of the chemical, while romaine lettuce can have up to 40 ppm. The worst offender is iceberg lettuce, which is allowed to have a whopping 180 ppm of sodium aluminum fluoride, or 180 times the amount of fluoride typically added to municipal water supplies. Conventional cereals, which are often made with pesticide-ridden grains, contain high levels of fluoride as well. At least chlorine will evaporate from a glass of water if you let it sit for an hour or so. Not so with fluoride. Not even cooking, food processing, or digestion will remove fluoride. Fluoride goes right up the food chain. It accumulates in fat cells when ingested or absorbed through the skin or mucous membranes. Dow Chemical, in their test of ProFume, their new fumigant for food handling facilities, found a residue of 754 ppm (parts per million) of fluoride anion in powdered eggs. They have petitioned the USDA to permit a maximum of 900 ppm of fluoride anion residue in powdered eggs, which was granted in July 2010. See how easy that was. Concentrations of fluoride in toothpaste sold in the United States range from 1,000 - 1,500 ppm. Toothpaste comes with a warning Keep out of reach of children under 6 years of age. If more than used for brushing is accidentally swallowed, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center right away. To reconstitute 1 egg you would need a tablespoon of powdered eggs. That is a lot more fluoride than what is in toothpaste. Get the picture.

Vulnerable population segments include the elderly, children, people with diabetes, immune deficiencies of calcium, vitamin C, cardiovascular problems, or kidney problems. Also your pets think about their food and water and their mysterious illnesses. Aluminum uptake to the brain has also been shown to be facilitated by fluoride, which is associated with Alzheimer's disease. In addition, other studies have suggested fluoride also facilitates aluminum uptake in bone tissue resulting in increased osteoporosis and other bone weaknesses resulting in the likelihood of fracture. The fact that kids nowadays seem to get broken bones much easier is no coincidence. There is also accumulation in bones, pineal gland and other tissues. Also there is evidence of suppression of normal thyroid function.  Fluoride competes for the receptor sites on the thyroid gland which respond to the thyroid stimulating hormone so that less of this hormone reaches the thyroid gland and so less thyroid hormone is manufactured. These damaging effects, all of which occur with small concentrations of fluoride, have obvious and easily identifiable effects on thyroid status. The running down of thyroid hormone means a slow slide into hypothyroidism. Already the incidence of hypothyroidism is increasing as a result of other environmental toxins and pollution together with wide spread nutritional deficiencies. The distortion of protein structure by fluoride causes the immune proteins to fail to recognize body proteins, and so they instigate an attack on them, which is Autoimmune Disease. Autoimmune diseases constitute a body of disease processes troubling many thousands of people. Like R/A, SLE, Asthma, Systemic Sclerosis are examples. Thyroid antibodies will be produced which will cause thyroiditis resulting in the common hypothyroid disease, Hashimoto's Disease and the hyperthyroidism of Graves' Disease.

Fluorides are used in many prescription drugs including some of the Serotonin uptake Inhibitors such as Prozac. Which brings about the ethical question, is someone trying to sedate the general population? There isn't enough space here to go into the all the more recent studies and tests, which clearly implicate Fluorides in a whole host of medical and mental problems. A search of the web will easily turn up hundreds of pages on these topics for those who would like to pursue it more. I only hope I lit the fire. So what can we do. First find if your local drinking water is fluoridated if it is campaign vigorously against it. Second get a filter for your drinking water like a filtering pitcher, filtering water bottle or sink filter, that will eliminate chlorine, fluoride as well as other toxins. Click one of the "Nourish A Life" banners on either side of this article for a low cost healthy solution, of removing fluoride, chlorine as well as other toxins, and pharmaceuticals from your water. Stop using obviously fluoridated products ie. toothpaste and mouthwash. There are many alternatives, read your labels carefully. Only eat organic fruits, vegetables, meat and eggs. Don't drink or eat products from aluminum cans.

The fluoride in the water contained in the product will be leaching the aluminum from the can and then motoring it to your brain when you eat or drink up, increasing your chances to develop Alzheimer's disease. Stop using dentists that don't understand fluoride is toxic, and stop trusting corporations and our federal government agencies, and local municipalities to have you best interest in mind, THEY DON'T, and for those of you that are still stinging from my comparison of Hitler to Obama, keep this in mind. Last month President Obama signed the Monsanto protection act, which states no one can hold Monsanto liable for any sickness or health maladies resulting from their GMO food experiments with YOU the public. Also the president just appointed Michel Taylor former V.P. of public policy for Monsanto as the FDA's new deputy commissioner for foods. Then he signed HR933 which protects Monsanto from ever having to label their GMO foods. So if you don't like the comparison too bad, get your head out of your ass and pay attention to whats going on around you. Good Luck...

Bottled Water Vs. Tap

It takes 3 times as much water to make the bottle as it does to fill it.

That one fact makes bottled water one of, if not THE most wasteful industry's on the planet. People every day ask me which bottled water is the best. The answer is as easy to answer as it is to ask. None of them, that's right I don't support the drinking of any bottled water period, and here's why. What I have found out is this. The Food and Drug Administration has little authority to regulate bottled water, according to a U.S. Congressional report released recently. While on the other hand, municipal water utilities are required to provide public reports of their water's test results, bottled water makers are not. So although you're paying as much as 20 times as much for bottled water, that doesn't mean it's any better than what's coming out of your faucet. In fact, it could be worse and you'd never know it. FYI the two largest producers of bottled water Pepsi, and Coke start with tap water. The difference is unlike tap water suppliers, bottled water companies don't have to have their water tested by a certified laboratory, and they aren't required to notify customers within 24 hours if they find elevated levels of contaminants, like public utilities are.

So now that we've been begging you for years to drink more water. The sad truth is most of us have been drinking bottled water, and really you don't know what you are drinking. Usually most people buy whatever is on sale. Thinking all bottled water is the same. Trusting the FDA once again to watch out for us. Are you done laughing yet? The truth is you don't have to spend more money in order to drink healthier water, but more about that later. So large greedy water companies jumped on the band wagon and started to produce sweet flavored waters. Calling them names like 0 calorie because they didn't use sugar instead substituting dangerous artificial sweeteners or GMO corn extracts like sucralose or high fructose corn syrup. "Vitamins, color, herbs, protein, and all the other additions to water, are a marketing ploy," says Marion Nestle, Ph.D., professor of nutrition studies at New York University. "The additives are usually a scant serving of the vitamins you really need in a day," claims Amy Subar, Ph.D. Nutritionist with the National Cancer Institute. Sometimes enhanced waters contain sugars and artificial flavorings that can pack more calories than diet soda. Before consuming any food or beverage with herbs and unusual ingredients, read the labels. Some ingredients can interact with prescription medications. Some other herbs should be avoided during pregnancy. Some also contain as guarana and kola, or caffeine. Which can excite your metabolism and blood pressure or heart rate.

One popular product "Vitamin Water" for instance is combined with corn syrup derived crystalline fructose, sorbitol (sugar alcohol), sugar, and gum acacia. Which is saw dust from the acacia tree that the ancient Egyptians used to glue paper together. Vitamins are the most important ingredients in Vitamin Water, if you think you are fulfilling any where near your daily vitamin requirements with this product you are a fool. "Vitamin Water" drinks contain 33g of sugar in a 20 oz. bottle, which is  equivalent to about 8 tsp. of sugar plus all the other artificial sweeteners. Another flavored water that I recently researched is Propel made by Pepsi they use sucralose (splenda) as their sweetener and if you read my article on Splenda you know that sucralose can trigger migraines as well as gastrointestinal issues among other things. So leave the flavored waters behind as you can see they are only money makers for the large corporations not healthy alternatives for you.

The American consumer is grossly under informed about waters. The International Water Association provides the following description of different water types on their website:
Spring Water:
Water derived from an underground formation from which water flows naturally to the surface of the earth. Spring water must be collected only at the spring or through a borehole tapping the underground formation feeding the spring. Spring water collected with the use of an external force must be from the same underground stratum as the spring and must have all the physical properties before treatment, and be of the same composition and quality as the water that flows naturally to the surface of the earth
Purified Water:
Water that has been produced by distillation, deionization, reverse osmosis or other suitable processes while meeting the definition of purified water in the United States Pharmacopoeia may be labeled as purified bottled water. Other suitable product names for bottled water treated by one of the above processes may include "distilled water" if it is produced by distillation, deionized water" if it is produced by deionization or "reverse osmosis water" if the process used is reverse osmosis.

Mineral Water:
Water containing not less than 250 parts per million total dissolved solids may be labeled as mineral water. Mineral water is distinguished from other types of bottled water by its constant level and relative proportions of mineral and trace elements at the point of emergence from the source. No minerals can be added to this product.
Sparkling Water:
Water that after treatment, and possible replacement with carbon dioxide, contains the same amount of carbon dioxide that it had as it emerged from the source. Sparkling bottled waters may be labeled as "sparkling drinking water," "sparkling mineral water," "sparkling spring water," etc.
Artesian Water/Artesian Well Water:
Water from a well that taps a confined aquifer (a water-bearing underground layer of rock or sand) in which the water level stands at some height above the top of the aquifer.

Well Water
Water from a hole bored, drilled or otherwise constructed in the ground, which taps the water aquifer.

As you can see, the differences vary widely. To be fair everyone has their own idea of what good tasting water is. So now let's focus on the issue of health.
There are growing concerns about the leaching of pthalates, known endocrine disruptor's, like BPA as well as antimony, in bottled water from the plastic in the bottles. BPA is used in all bottles of all bottled water. BPA mimics the hormone estrogen once in your body and causes unseen disruption and damage in your body.function. Other concerns include bacteria. Remember these companies report to no one. There has been a wide range of variation among testing of different bottled waters. So from a health perspective what set of physical characteristics is ideal? Common sense says that a pH of 7.4 to 7.6 is ideal. This is the pH of human blood and optimum for drinking water. Some people prefer to drink highly alkaline water, in the range of 8 or 9. Haven't figured that out yet. Still, some people may enjoy the taste of low pH acidic water. They probably suck on lemons for fun. Though most health practitioners suggest that acidic drinks and foods contribute to increasing the body's vulnerability to disease and tooth decay.

Additionally there is evidence from a number of studies funded by the World Health Organization (WHO) that people who drink water containing minerals experience lower rates of disease than those who drink water with the minerals removed. Total dissolved solids, TDS is the sum total of all the minerals in water. While minerals are desirable there is a range of suitability. Since TDS is comprised of a number of substances, high levels will affect the taste of water and may also affect toxicity. Generally, a low TDS is considered by some health practitioners to be more hydrating. EPA has set it's Maximum Contaminant Level for TDS in drinking water at 500mg / l for aesthetic purposes. Water with a very low TDS, say 30 or less, will have a sharp crisp taste, perhaps considered "clean" by some. A higher TDS, in the range of 150 to 250, provides more "taste". Some people may enjoy the distinct flavor of the mineral waters such as Perrier or Pellegrino. It is the high TDS and high sulfates that contribute to their unique taste. Remember this you can call your local municipal water utility any time and get the most recent report of the content of your tap water. The water where I live here in California is tested over 4000 times a year.

Now there's another issue of importance from an environmental perspective. That's the issue of transportation energy. Ideally, consumers should choose water produced locally. Your tap water. It has been estimated that that it takes a quart of oil to import one bottle of Fiji water, a ridiculous waste of energy. A responsible consumer has to consider the environmental impact of using bottled water. So ideally, you'll drink local water. Most public water supplies are better quality than bottled the water, are legally monitored, and don't need transportation and bottle production factories to deliver the water to you. Meeting the annual U.S. demand for plastic bottles requires enough oil to keep 100,000 cars on the road for a year, says Janet Larsen of the Earth Policy Institute. The cost of transporting bottled water is staggering. Just looking at U.S. costs, 1 billion bottles of water are transported per week. The equivalent of 37,800 18-wheelers delivering water. Sure, 100 million empty water bottles the U.S. produces per day can be recycled, but the sad truth is, about 86% of them end up in the trash, shipped to landfills of poor third world nations like India. Hardly worth it, for what flows out of the tap and into a free reusable glass.
    • Bottled water costs 240 to 10,000 times more than tap water—on average between $1 to $2 per gallon, with high-end brands going for $5 per liter
    • The price of one bottle of Evian can pay for 1,000 gallons of tap water
    • Each year across the world, over $100 billion dollars is spent on bottled water
    • In 2006, approximately 17 million barrels of oil were used to produce plastic for the bottled water consumed by Americans, enough energy to fuel more than 1 million cars and light trucks for a year

Have you heard of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch? The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is a vast area of the Pacific Ocean, largely made up of suspended plastic and other floating plastic garbage. As reported on Wikipedia, recent research sponsored by the National Science Foundation suggests the affected area may be three times the size of Texas and growing by the day. With one of similar size north of the Caribbean Sea. Suspended plastic affects the health of all ocean species worldwide. Every organism in the sea mistakes the suspended plastic floating in the sea for food it eats it and eventually dies.

Recent random scientific deep-water tests around the world have revealed suspended plastics everywhere in every ocean around the globe. On the surface as well as at every depth. We as irresponsible humans have started the irreversible demise of our oceans through our own neglect of discarded plastic.

I believe the only sustainable eco-conscious, least expensive choice for healthy drinking water is fill your own filtering water bottle from the tap, or have a filtering system for your home. Since most independent studies on bottled water show contamination from bacteria and / or synthetic chemicals, BPA in the plastic, and the FACT that 86% of the plastic ends up in land-fills and our oceans. Every time you see one of your children drinking from a plastic water bottle, you have to ask yourself "is it right for me to jeopardize my families health, so I can make Pepsi. and Coke wealthy beyond imagination? Because that is exactly what you are doing by using bottled water. If you click one of the "Nourish A Life Banners" on either side of this article it will take you directly to a page that offers the very best water filtering sport bottles, pitchers and home filtering systems at very low cost. They filter chlorine, fluoride, pharmaceuticals, etc. from your tap water. Making it the best alternative for you and your families health and for our planet. Be part of the solution not part of the problem. Or click the "Join Us" button in the left column and sell our products on your website, or to your friends for some extra income. Grow up it's time to get off the bottle and get on the tap. For yourself, your family and the environment. Good Luck...

      White Iced Tea

White tea protects against cancer, heart disease, and stroke

My friends and clients often ask me for a healthy alternative to water, and my answer has to be, is there anything more satisfying than a cold glass of iced tea on a hot summers day. Not only does it taste great, but iced tea has also been proven to help make our immune systems stronger, protect our teeth from plaque, and will help us to burn more calories. Tea is just as healthy for you cold as hot, and since it's summer I'm going to try and convince you just how delicious and healthy a tall glass of white peppermint ice tea can be. Unsweetened of course. For starters, white tea is full of more than 700 different chemicals, antioxidants, amino acids, and vitamins C, E, and K. Remember antioxidants help protect us against cell damage from free radicals. Antioxidants in white tea are called flavonoids, and they are also in vegetables and fruits. Eight ounces of iced tea, whether it is white, green or black, contains anywhere from 145 to 200 mg of these flavonoids. While green and black tea are very healthy, white tea is the least processed tea and has the highest antioxidant levels, and the darker the tea the more it will stain your teeth. First a little history:

The history of green tea started in China and the origin is surrounded by myths and legends. One of the earliest stories was dated as far back as 5000 years ago. White tea became revered during China's Song Dynasty (960-1279). It was the choice of the royal court and was given as tribute to the emperor. White tea leaves and buds were ground into a silvery powder, which was then whisked in bowls during the Song Tea Ceremony. This was the inspiration for the famous Japanese Tea Ceremony. It was only after the fall of the Mongolian empire, that tea drinking spread to the whole population of China. During the time when China was dominating the sea, tea was part of the provisions given to the sailors. In time, tea made it's way to Japan. It was the Japanese that developed new variations of tea. The history of tea continued when a Portuguese missionary introduced it to European counties. After that, the Dutch East India Company launched the trade of tea by shipping it from China to Europe.

Guess what, black tea, green tea, oolong tea, white tea and yellow tea, all come from the same evergreen plantCamelia Sinensis. The differences lie in how each tea is processed. The tea leaves oxidize and wilt if not dried quickly after picking. As the chlorophyll in the leaves break down, the leaves progressively darken. This process of enzymatic oxidation is called fermentation in the tea industry, even though in reality this is not fermentation. That is, no micro-organism is added to ferment the tea. It goes like this, White tea is unwilted and unoxidized by picking and air drying; Yellow tea is unwilted and unoxidized but allowed to yellow; Green tea is wilted and unoxidized, picked, then heated, by steaming or pan frying, then drying the leaves; Oolong tea is wilted, bruised, and partially oxidized; Black tea is wilted, crushed, and fully oxidized. Now, besides caffeine, white tea also contains catechin polyphenols that raise thermogenesis (rate calories are burned), that will increase your energy, endurance, and fat burning. The University of Geneva and the University of Birmingham conducted clinical trials indicating white tea raises metabolic rates, speeds up fat oxidation and improves insulin sensitivity and glucose balance. City College of the University of New York, found that the amino acid L-theanine, found exclusively in the tea plant, is absorbed by the small intestine and crosses the blood-brain barrier affecting the

brain's neurotransmitters boosting mental alertness by increasing alpha brain-wave activity, and resulting in a calmer, more alert state of mind. The Mayo Clinic Health Letter says, "tea could be beneficial in reducing inflammation related to arthritis and slowing cartilage breakdown. It may also improve bone mineral density in older women". "Those who consume white tea daily show less risk of memory loss. The potential benefits seem to be in the tea cup and not in supplements or tea extract capsules." A 2004 study at Pace University revealed that white tea extract may help slow viruses and bacterial growth, thus reducing the incidence of staphylococcus and streptococcus infections, pneumonia, fungus growth, and even dental plaque. An article published by scientists from the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University found that consumption of moderate amounts of white tea may hedge against colon tumors consistent with the prescription drug, sulindac. When used in combination with the drug, the results were more effective. A study at Kingston University in 2009 showed that white tea has high anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-collagenase, and anti-elastase properties which could potentially reduce the risks of developing rheumatoid arthritis, some cancers, heart disease and slow the enzymatic break-down of elastin and collagen, traits which accompany aging.

As I said white tea comes from the buds and leaves of the Chinese Camellia sinensis plant. The leaves and buds are allowed to wither in natural sunlight. The name "white tea" originates from the fine silvery-white hairs on the unopened buds of the tea plant, which gives the plant a whitish appearance. The beverage itself is not white or colorless it's pale yellow. The secret of white tea lies in the fact it is rich in catechin polyphenols, particularly EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate). EGCG is a powerful anti-oxidant, besides inhibiting the growth of cancer cells, it kills cancer cells without harming healthy tissue. White tea is even proven to help prevent tooth decay. Just as it's bacteria destroying abilities can help prevent food poisoning, it can also kill the bacteria that causes dental plaque. White tea contains less caffeine than coffee. There are approximately 30-60mg. of caffeine in six to eight ounces of tea, compared to over 100 mg. in eight ounces of coffee. Scientists from Purdue University recently reported that tea reduced mercury absorption by as much as 92% when ingested with mercury-contaminated mackerel. This is a big deal because even small amounts of mercury can damage your heart, blood vessels and central nervous system. So the next time you knock back some sushi, tuna or swordfish pass on the saki and order the tea.

Now take it from me the best way to make ice tea is to start with a gallon jar and the sun. I use white organic peppermint tea, 4 bags per. gallon. Now if you can't find white peppermint tea go buy a peppermint plant form the nursery they're cheep, not mint. Mint is great for Mojitos but I think peppermint tastes better in tea. If you don't like peppermint try slices of pear or cinnamon the possibilities are endless. Let your white tea sit out all day in the sun and refrigerate after the sun sets. It's that easy. Always use organic white in unbleached bags, or loose white in a tea ball. China's Fujian province, is the heartland of white tea so read your labels. If you use fruits or peppermint for added flavor you'll never need sweetener, but if you just can't drink tea that isn't sweet, then use Stevia or Xyliotl both are natural and won't raise your blood glucose level enough to demand an insulin response. Stay away from the canned and bottled teas, don't think you can get all of the goodness of tea from drinking the chilled canned and bottled selections from your closest convenience store's cooler. In order to receive the benefits from iced tea, you must make sure to drink freshly brewed organic iced tea . The cans of tea in the supermarket are lined with BPA and they have preservatives (salts) in them to extend shelf life and HFC"s (High Fructose Corn Syrup) sucralouse or sugar. Most likely they aren't organic which means pesticides, herbicides or GMO's. Which defeats the purpose of the healthy drink. So this summer give some white iced tea a try you'll be glad you did. Good Luck...

Fecal Residue On Your Toothbrush !

Is Your Toothbrush Uncovered In The Bathroom?

This is a revisit to an article that I wrote over a year ago with some updates. With all the mystery sicknesses these days, I believe it needs to be re-digested. (pun intended) So this is a little bit of a departure from my regular nutrition blog.  If this kind of topic makes you squirm, or you think you have it covered, or you just like sailing down the river D-Nile, we'll see you on Friday with a new topic. For those of us who can handle the topic no matter how unpleasant, here we go. The event seems to have been first brought to our attention by University of Arizona environmental microbiologist Charles Gerba when he published a article in 1975, describing bacterial and viral aerosols due to toilet flushing. Over the last three decades, he's written over 400 papers in peer-reviewed journals on infection and disinfection. He has conducted tests by placing pieces of gauze in different locations around the bathroom and measuring the bacterial and viral levels on them after a toilet flush, and his results are more than just a little disturbing.

Gerba's studies proved that the water droplets, in an invisible cloud travel six to eight feet out and up, so the areas of the bathroom not directly adjacent the toilet are still contaminated. Bacteria will cling to ceilings and thrive in the humid environment in your bathroom. Most times the situation is left untreated for months or years. I mean who cleans their bathroom ceiling, right? That's why some odors remain in your restroom after it's been to be otherwise thoroughly cleaned. The bacterial mist has also been shown to stay in the air for at least two hours after each flush, thus maximizing its chance to float around and spread. "The greatest aerosol dispersal occurs not during the initial moments of the flush, but rather once most of the water has already left the bowl," according to Philip Tierno, MD, director of clinical microbiology and diagnostic immunology at New York University Medical Center and Mt. Sinai Medical Center. "To limit the scope of the aerosol effect, the simplest method is to close the lid on the toilet every time before flushing." Notice he said limit and not eliminate. What happens when you close the lid is that the cloud squirts out from the sides with force, it doesn't end up on the ceiling, but you get the picture. Closing the seat reduces that bacteria by about 80% though, which is a considerable difference. If you have trouble remembering to close the lid, maybe you should purchase an auto closing lid, they are beginning to become more common these days. They work just like those laser operated hand dryers in public restrooms.

The top of toilet seats have actually been determined to be the least infected place in the bathroom because the environment is too dry to support a large bacterial population. The underside of the seat however has a higher than average microbial population. The place in a restroom with the highest concentration of microbial colonies in restrooms is, surprisingly, the sink, and toothbrushes, due to accumulations of water. This is where these organisms breed freely after landing from their aerial journey. In spite of all the evidence, some people try and fool themselves into thinking that these things aren't true or that they don't apply to their toothbrushes. Make no mistake though your toothbrush is like a toilet brush, a bacterial hot-zone filled with all kinds of disgusting germs. You can be sure that allowing these germs to enter your mouth and bloodstream each day is harmful to your long-term health.

One Professor of Risk Analysis from Harvard University School of Public Health had this to say, "It may surprise you, or sicken you to know that if your toothbrush is stored near the toilet, the chances are great that it is covered with E.coli bacteria." Scientists at the University of Buffalo believe that the chemicals produced by the immune system's reaction to periodontal disease, "the inflammatory response," spill over into the bloodstream through cuts in the gums. Then the chemicals make their way to the liver to produce proteins that inflame the arterial walls and clot the blood, where Atherosclerosis and, ultimately, heart attack may result.

Ok so what do we do. The American Dental Association ADA, states that keeping your toothbrush in a cabinet or using a toothbrush cover actually increases bacteria and therefore should never be done if at all possible. Do not keep lots of brushes in one cup. They will rub together and spread germs, to everyone in the house. Ever wonder why when one person in your family gets sick the rest of the family soon follows? Wash your hands before handling your toothbrush. It seems rather obvious, but all too often people reach straight for the toothpaste tube before washing their hands. If you still think washing your hands is putting some soap on your palms and quickly rubbing them together and rinsing, like when you were 6 years old, then you deserve to get sick. Clean between your fingers that's where the sneakiest germs hide. Wash your toothbrush before and after every use. This constitutes holding it under running water and rubbing your thumb over it with force. Do this for five to ten seconds. I store mine bristles submerged in a small glass with an alcohol based mouthwash like Listerine, in the medicine cabinet, and change the mouthwash daily. ADA says get a new brush every 3 months, I say 1 month because they are so cheep these days. Also you can consider spending about $20.00 on a UV toothbrush cleaner.

It's safe and it automatically shuts off. Some of them you can even put your shaving razor in for disinfection also. The majority of these devices use ultra violet light to kill any germs that way be left on a toothbrushes. I've seen another another kind of sterilizer that utilizes steam and dry heat to kill any tooth brush bacteria. These machines are compact, easy to use, and considered really
efficient.  Now this year what I would like to add to this article is a little reminder about your cell phone. I can hear you all groaning now. A recent study found that over 16% of the phones in the study were contaminated with E coli. Nobody ever cleans or disinfects their phone, so the germs and bacteria just keep building up. What types of germs? E. coli, as well as influenza and MRSA, a germ that causes rashes and skin infections. Frequently used cell phones are warm, which makes them a great breeding ground for bacteria, and with touch-screen phones, the same part of the phone you touch with your fingertips is pressed right up against your face and mouth, upping your chances of infection. Disinfect your phone at least once a week, more during cold and flu season. Use disinfectant wipes, but spraying some type of anti-microbial solution on a paper towel and wiping down your phone works just as well.

So there you have it the down and dirty on what we've been putting in and on our mouths. Cheer up though. Now that we know the score we can make some changes, and see if our dental and overall health improves. For those that took a pass on this article because it was too gross, Good Luck...

      Butter Your Muffin

Believe this, butter can provide several health benefits.

Mmm.. fresh baked bread and butter, makes my mouth water just thinking about it.. Toss in a cup of chamomile tea, and there you have it, a perfect joy. I know this is going to come as a surprise to most, but butter is recommended to incorporate healthy fats and oils into your diet. Butter is rich in an easily-absorbed form of vitamin A. In addition, it contains antioxidants, which are beneficial to the body, and is a great source of vitamins D, K and E. Unfortunately somewhere around the 1960's someone started whispering that increased fat consumption meant you were likely to die from heart disease, and so America's decline in butter use began. Some of the whispering was coming from the vegetarian movement. Around that same time, it was scientifically shown that high cholesterol could be a contributor to heart disease, by increasing plaque on artery walls. That's when the big Margarine lobby rolled out it's misinformation campaign. With commercials of how bad, butter was for you. Through cute commercials on our black and white T.V.'s they convinced us to stop eating a natural food, and en mass switch to eating a manufactured grease that was died yellow. Just as they did with the egg yolk cholesterol hysteria of the 80's and 90's. Companies came up with this idea, they would band together, create unsubstantiated false research to convince the American public that eating natural and healthy products, like butter and eggs, were bad for you, for their profit. Everyone from doctors, to personal trainers, to dietitians were convinced that butter, consisted of mostly saturated fat and was a significant source of cholesterol, and was bad for our health. I have to confess I was one of the guilty.

Thinking we had found the Holy Grail of fitness secrets we all went all climbed on board, struck egg yolks and butter from our diets. Systematically we started consuming HUGE amounts of hydrogenated oils for about thirty years. Boy did we all, by our own lack of common sense, get bamboozled. Accordingto the Mayo Clinic website, trans fat is made by adding hydrogen to vegetable oil through a process of super heating, called hydrogenation, which makes the oil less likely to spoil. Using trans fats in the manufacturing of foods helps foods stay fresh longer, have a longer shelf life and have a less greasy feel. Scientists aren't sure exactly why, but the addition of hydrogen to oil increases your cholesterol more than other types of fats. It's thought that adding hydrogen to oil makes the oil more difficult to digest, and your body recognizes trans fats as saturated fats.

Did you know that France's annual consumption of butter, per capita is about 19.4 pounds, while here in the "health conscious" United States, we only consume about 4.1 pounds. Not only that, the French also consume almost 29 pounds of cheese to our 11 pounds. We consume roughly the same amount of eggs each year as the French. Now what really is interesting is that France has a population of only about 60,000,000 people compared to our 300,000,000. Their instances of heart attack and stroke each year (per thousand) is about half of ours. Now recently, a Medical Research Council survey showed that men who eat butter ran half the risk of getting heart disease as those who ate margarine. Sally Fallon and Mary G. Enig, PhD's in lipid biochemistry, make the point that heart disease was rare in America at the turn of the century. Between 1920 and 1960, the incidence of heart disease rose to become America's number one killer. During the same period butter consumption plummeted from eighteen pounds per person per year to four. The notion that butter causes weight gain is a sad misconception. The short and medium chain fatty acids in butter are not stored in the adipose tissue, but are used for quick energy. Fat tissue in humans is composed mainly of longer chain fatty acids. These come from super heated  polyunsaturated oils as well as from refined carbohydrates.

Butter contains lecithin, a substance that assists in the proper assimilation and metabolism of cholesterol and other fat constituents. While the vitamin A and the anti-oxidants in butter like vitamin E, selenium and cholesterol, protect us against cancer as well as heart disease. Welcome to 2011, here's the real science. Dr. Ronald Krauss, one the world's leading lipid researchers, directly showed that while saturated fat from dairy can raise LDL, the increase is in large, fluffy, and benign LDL, not the small, dense, and atherogenic LDL that clogs your arteries. This actually decreases your risk of cardiovascular disease.

Dr. Dariush Mozaffarianand colleagues at Harvard found that blood content oftrans-palmitoleatewas associated with, higher HDL cholesterol, lower serum triglycerides, lower C-reactive protein, lower fasting insulin, and lower calculated insulin resistance. People with the highest trans-palmitoleate levels had 1/3 the risk of developing diabetes over their three year study. Dairy fat and red meat are virtually the only sources of this trans-palmitoleate fatty acid. In this study, most of the trans-palmitoleate came specifically from dairy fat. Now there is a clear difference between butter and dairy from grass fed open pasture cows and grain fed cows on concentrated animal feeding operations that are milked nearly year-round, given growth hormones and antibiotics, and live in their own waste. Most grass fed cows live on small farms naturally eat grass, get exercise, fresh air and sunshine, and are only milked based on their seasonal reproductive cycle. The quality of life and, therefore, quality of milk and dairy products is vastly different. The overwhelming majority of scientific indications are that real butter has a positive health impact. There are so many vitamins found in saturated animal fats which are integral to the strengthening of the immune system and the warding off of many diseases including cancer. Some studies have shown that butter can have a positive effect on arthritis, can also lessen the risk of osteoporosis, reduce problems with the thyroid glands, and can promote good gastrointestinal health. There are a great many benefits to eating natural butters and upon closer inspection many of the supposed drawbacks are simply unprovable or outright untrue.

      Some Types of Butter:

      1. Cultured Butter: is made from cream in which fermentation, the conversion of milk sugars into lactic acid has begun to take place. Most butters today are made from cream that's undergone pasteurization, which kills naturally occurring bacteria, so, for this style, lactic-acid bacteria are added to induce fermentation and create a sharper, cultured taste. Cultured butter is the preferred style in most of continental Europe.

      2. Salted Buttera holdover from the days when salt was added to butter to forestall spoilage, can come in both cultured and uncultured versions. Salted butters, made with sea salt or fleur de sel, should be your choice in this category.
      3. Pungent-tasting preserved butters: Smen, (quit giggling) a Moroccan delicacy, belong to a variety known as fermented butter; they have been allowed to age for anywhere from two weeks to two years and are often seasoned with herbs and spices.

      4. Raw-Cream Butters: Are among the most prized but hardest-to-find butter varieties in this country, they are made from farm-fresh, unpasteurized cream, hard to find unless you live on on near a dairy farm.

      5. Clarified Butter: is butter that's been heated so that its water content evaporates and has had its milk solids, protein and lactose removed is referred to as clarified butter. This pure, long-lasting butterfat, popular in India where it is called Ghee, has a high smoke point and serves as a versatile cooking medium, ideal for frying and sautéing.

      6. Uncultured Butter: is made from fresh, pasteurized cream is generally referred to as sweet cream butter, which was named after the advent of refrigeration to distinguish it from butter made with soured cream. It's the most common style in North America. Characterized by a smooth, neutral flavor. Unsalted sweet cream butter is a common choice for baking.

      7. Whipped Butter: In the mid-20th century, Americans predilection for chilled yet spreadable butter led to the development of whipped butter, which has nitrogen gas whipped into it after it has been churned, so that it will remain soft at low temperatures. Its low density relative to regular butter makes it a poor choice for cooking.

Now don't get silly with the butter, just because you know it's not an automatic death sentence. It is still a calorie dense food. Eat more calories then you burn and you gain weight.
      • 20 calories in 1 small pat (square) of salted/unsalted butter
      • 33-34 calories in 1 teaspoon of butter salted/unsalted
      • 101 calories in 1 tablespoon of salted/unsalted butter
Now remember with conventional butter, because animals concentrate toxins in their fat, that means you are still eating those added hormones, anti-biotics, and toxins. If the cow was fed healthy green grass like it was supposed to, the butter is loaded with nutrients. It contains:
      • CLA (conjugated linoleic acid)- a fatty acid primarily found in beef and dairy products, which is linked to heart health, effective weight management, cancer suppression.
      • Vitamin K2 – refered to as Activator X, which promotes healthy bones and teeth, a properly functioning nervous system, and robust cardiovascular health.
      • An array of vitamins and minerals – grass fed butter is bright yellow, unlike grain fed butter which is pale and white. Generally the more colourful a food, the more nutrients it contains.
      • A super Omega 3 to 6 ratio – keeping your Omega 3 to 6 ratios in line is important for reducing inflammation.
So at the very least, you want to be eating organic butter. Just eating organic isn't going to cut it if you want to eat butter for its maximum health benefits. If that is the case, you need to get grass fed. In other words, if you just want to eat butter because it's healthier and tastes great, then organic is okay. If you want something that tastes great AND is super healthy and nutritious, you need to find grass fed butter. Trader Joe's, has an awesome brand of grass fed butter available there called Kerry Gold. I do suggest that you to RUN not walk away from any products containing hydrogenated, partially hydrogenated oils, canola oil, soy protein, trans fats or phoney butters like margarine. Throw away that hydrogenated chemical cesspool called margarine in the trash and go get yourself real organic grass fed butter. Good Luck...
